Late October, once the trees are properly bare, and a second look in February. Everything else is a guess based on what's overhanging your roof.
Why timing matters more than frequency
Clear your gutters too early and you'll be back up the ladder in three weeks once the rest of the leaves come down. Clear them too late and the first hard rain of the season backs up over the edge, running straight down the brickwork instead of through the downpipe — which is how damp patches and stained render actually start, not from the roof itself.
The two-check approach
Most UK houses only need gutters cleared twice a year:
- Late October to early November — once deciduous trees nearby have properly dropped their leaves, not while they're still falling.
- February — a shorter check, mainly for anything blown in over winter, moss growth, or the odd tennis ball.
Houses near a lot of trees — especially sycamore, lime or horse chestnut, which all drop heavily — sometimes need a third check in high summer if the gutters are visibly sagging or you can see growth from the ground.
What backed-up gutters actually cost you
A blocked gutter doesn't just overflow decoratively. Water running down the wall instead of through the downpipe is one of the more common causes of damp in older UK houses, and left long enough it can get behind render, rot timber fascia boards, or find its way into a cavity wall. A gutter clear is a cheap, occasional job. The repair for what a blocked one causes over a few winters usually isn't.
Guards cut the job down, not out
A gutter guard or mesh won't stop you needing to look at all, but it changes what "clearing" means — instead of scooping out a season's worth of wet leaf sludge, you're brushing debris off the top of a mesh that's already kept it out of the gutter itself. Worth fitting once, rather than dreading the job twice a year indefinitely.
Signs you've left it too long
Water visibly spilling over the edge of the gutter during rain, plants or moss growing along the length of it, or a gutter that sags visibly in the middle — all three mean it's overdue, regardless of what month it is. Have a look at our gutter guards and leaf guards if you'd rather fit something once than keep climbing the ladder.
